A Brief History of Research on PE Polyethylene Anticorrosion Tape

The technology of anti-corrosion adhesive tape originated in the mid-20th century. With the development of the oil and gas industry and the construction of long-distance pipelines, the demand for pipeline corrosion protection has increased significantly. Polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape, as a technology specifically for external pipeline corrosion protection, began to be developed and applied in the 1960s.

 

The earliest domestic research on polyethylene anti-corrosion adhesive tape was initiated in 1990 by the North China Oilfield Rubber Products and Anti-corrosion Technology Research Institute. In 1991, it was listed as a technical project for "Corrosion and Protection Research of Oil and Gas Gathering and Transportation Systems" and a key project in the Eighth Five-Year Plan of the then China National Petroleum Corporation. After three years of effort, the first batch of qualified polyethylene anti-corrosion tape products with technical performance comparable to foreign Polyken tapes rolled off the production line in March 1993.

 

The success of this technology has changed the traditional "three-layer cloth and four-layer oil" petroleum asphalt anti-corrosion process, improving anti-corrosion quality, safety, and mechanization. Over time, anti-corrosion adhesive tape has evolved from a single product into a complete anti-corrosion system that includes a variety of supporting components such as primer, inner tape, and outer tape. Corresponding international and industry standards have been established to ensure its quality and effectiveness.
